Bismarck Meals on Wheels, Inc., which began in 1972 with one client, is nonprofit organization of community-minded people. Its purpose is to arrange for delivery of well-balanced hot meals to the homes of those who find it difficult or impossible to cook for themselves.
Meals are prepared in the kitchen of Medcenter One, under supervision of a registered dietitian with certification of the State Health Department. They are therefore well balanced and nutritious. Each meal, complete with beverage, comes in separated hot and cold containers and is ready to eat. Specially planned menus meet the need of clients whose physicians have prescribed low-sodium, low-calorie, diabetic, or other specific diets; these represent about three fourths of the clients on the program.
The meals are delivered at noontime, Monday through Friday including holidays. People delivering the meals are volunteers who want to help clients enjoy at least one nutritious meal daily.
The Meals on Wheels Program pays the actual cost of the meals, then charges the full amount to recipients who are able to pay. A sliding-fee scale is available for any clients in need of subsidized or free meals.
Bismarck Meals on Wheels is not federally funded. It is entirely dependent on contributions from churches, organizations, and individuals. If you would like to help, a gift of $20.00 would provide meals for a client for five days, Monday through Friday.
Each month, 60 or more volunteers are needed to deliver the meals to clients. Volunteers usually sign up to deliver meals four or five times during the specific month, but some volunteers help the program all through the year.
Bismarck Meals on Wheels, Inc., has a board of directors - - civic-spirited citizens of Bismarck. The board employs a part time coordinator who is responsible for scheduling volunteers, processing applications, and billing clients.
